I gift freely given should never be expected back. Otherwise it was not a gift, it was a loan. That is, also, why the engagement ring (commitment) is separate from the wedding band (legally binding).
That being said, I really loved the ring I bought for my (former)wife, white gold and a blue Sapphire in a lily setting. I offered to buy it back from her but she had already hocked it and would not tell me where.
I do think that if it is a family heirloom that that is a special situation. The man should offer to replace the ring and if she refuses then she is being the rude one.

I actually returned a ruby once...stupid of me. If I had sold it I would have got at least *something* out of that relationship!
The reason I think girls don't return the diamond is that their feelings for the man may have changed, but not for the ring!

He can have the diamonds back. He can give them to his new girlfriend so she can think about how she's getting my sloppy seconds in EVERYTHING. Honestly though, I'm probably going to pawn them to get enough money to make up for the child support he refuses to pay.
