Keep in mind whether or not you would want Japan to drop a bomb on the United States. Please give a fair opinion.

Opal, I think that is an excellent question. On the one hand it can be argued that the Japanese refused to surrender and the bomb saved many Allied casualties it would have incurred in an invasion attempt. Remember, too, Japan started this war with the U.S. On the other hand many civilians were killed and injured and the war may have ended soon without the bomb. Some speculate Truman wanted to use the bomb to see how well it worked and to scare the hell out of the Russians. Hard to say now how one would have felt then.

No one, including the creators of the bomb (Oppenheimer, Einstein...) understood exactly how extensive the damage would be from THE bomb.

You leave out some details from your question... do you mean to say, if I knew THEN what I know NOW, would I have been for it? Probably not.

But if I knew THEN what everybody knew THEN, then yes, I would have been for it. Japan brought the war to us... they were not too unlike the Islamic terrorists of today, in that they had kamikaze pilots who would crash their planes into targets to kilss as many people as possible... they were known for their cruel death marches and torture practices... and the fight was dragging on and on.

The A-bomb, though utterly more devastating than anyone could have imagined, ENDED the war.

It was and should have been the last time a bomb of that magnitude was ever dropped on a people. We used it, somewhat naively, to end a bloody war...

Iran and Korea have threatened to use it, KNOWING the potential impact, as a weapon against people they don't like.

Big difference between then and now.

Considering the nobody really understood the far reaching consequences of going nuclear, I would have been for it. The reality of the time was that nobody knew where this was leading, certainly not the average American, who had been embroiled in this war for four years. We faced invading the Japanese mainland, which would have been a long and bloody battle. I wouldn't have wanted Japan to drop the bomb on us but I don't see how that plays into the question at all. We had the bomb, they didn't.

I see the bombing of population centers to be extremely unethical. A more appropriate use would have been to use the atom bombs against their navy. Even before the bomb was dropped the Japanese emperor was in favor of surrendering to save the loss of life of an invasion. If we had demonstrated the power of the bomb against their military I think that many civilian lives would have been saved. Of course hindsight is 20/20.

drop 1 bomb, end a war? drop 1 bomb, save lives of your own country men? Drop 1 bomb, on a country that attacked your country first? If you are at war, you drop bombs.

I would say yes, far more lives would have been lost on both sides had we continued the course we were on, the firebombing of Japan by the U.S accounted for far more deaths then the two atomic weapons dropped on Japan. Let's just stay away from war all together and work on our understanding of one another.

For. Reason? December 7th - the unprovoked attack on Pearl Harbor.

Would I want Japan to bomb us? Of course not...but we haven't attacked them while they sleep either.

And all opinions are fair, it's just whether anyone agrees with them or not. ☺
