4 to 5 months is SUCH a long time to wait before finding out what's going to happen on your favourite shows!!!

It can be frustrating but crews and actors need vacations. In addition I think people watch less tv in the summer and are more active and outdoors - so less people are sitting glued to the tv. Its also another avenue for debuting new shows.

Most shows will only run in the Fall, Winter, and Spring seasons because the Summer months are typically when people are not as interested in watching television. Vacations, cookouts, and other outdoor activities take up people's time in the summer. And since most of the bigger shows pay their castmembers large salaries (some over $1mil per episode), they're not gonna waste all that money and good story ideas on a time when not as many people are gonna watch. That's a corny answer, but what do you expect?! haha

A couple of reasons. One is like everyone has said; time to shoot show (a hour show may take a coouple of weeks to complete), to a lesser degree is time of for the actors. The main reason, I believe, is that shows are renewed on a seasonal basis. Episodes are purchased on a seasonal basis. A show may have 20 episodes +/-. After the end of the season, the tv channel has the choice of wanting to continue to show it, it may or may not want to continue the show.

It gives time for the actors in the show to pursue other projects (i.e. movies) and for the writers and producers to really flesh out the next season.
