Sounds like the choke is stuck closed, or the fuel bowl float is stuck and dumping gas into your engine.

Black smoke can be caused by an extreme rich fuel mixture.

This could be caused by several things such as a stuck or mis adjusted choke, stuck metering rods, or bad float valve.

I would rebuild the carburetor, or if it is beyond your skill level, have it replaced. It is not worth having a mechanic rebuild the carburetor as the rate per hour would quickly exceed the cost of a new carburetor.

This engine used a Rochester Quadrajet 4 barrel. I would only consider having a mechanic rebuilding it if you want to keep it factory original considering its age.

Sounds like it is running rich. If you're not real familiar with carburetors, find a good shop and have them go through it. You probably have an idle air jet clogged up. Be careful though, alot of shops won't work on carburetors anymore. I think their techs are scared of them.

Usually when your engine blows smoke--it is because your piston rings are worn out. If you have them replaced and your valves ground, and new bearings put in, your engine will be like new.
