I know where you are coming from. Read and live by this and peace of mind will surely follow:

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there maybe in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly: listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant: they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons: they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself to others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let not this blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself! Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

You are child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. Whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be.

Whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful

Strive to be happy.

You have three questions there, but I'm interested in your first one. Don't try to go from your head to your heart (or make your boyfriend/girlfriend do so). Each of us has different balances of the cerebral and the emotional. One friend of mine calls me insensitive, another says I'm over-sensitive. Only you know. So, what I'm saying is just be good, regardless of whether you're a head-person or a heart-person or a mix of the two. From the age of 7 we all have a conscience and the ability to judge the wisdom of our decisions and their effects on others. You can do that either from your rational side or your sensitive side, depending on who you are. Yes, we are a success-driven race, us humans, but where would humanity be if we weren't? The question is, though, is whether your drive for success is self-seeking or is it for the betterment of others?. Take JK Rowling - she is ideally successful; she has gained her own success, but has given millions of people joy and a love of reading. The fact that you ask these questions means you most definitely are a good and loving person.

You need to develop your character and know yourself. True wisdom is obtained through knowledge, experience and reflection. Take a moral stand against our over-consumptive, efficiency-based economy. The problem is that people before us made certain assumptions or didn't plan for certain things. Then, people learn how to act from how other people act. We never question our system out of pride or simply for coherency. We all seem to think that money is the sole indicator of value, when really, money has nothing to do with value in the moral or social sense; only in the economic sense. If everyone, everywhere were suddenly made aware of all of your actions, would they think you were a good person? I think there is intrinsic value to being a good person; that we can attribute value to ourselves for consciously inconveniencing ourselves for the benefit of others.

Selfishness has a bad reputation in our culture. My ability to help you is based on my ability to take care of myself. If I can't or won't take care of myself, any assistance that I can provide to you will be limited by my coping or my coping resources.

The latter doesn't make sense for me. Loving someone for whom you don't already feel a sense of affection is unreasonable to me. Caring for someone for whom you don't care about is also a problematic logically.

These, I think, are the terrible state of having "shoulds". I should care about X. I should love X. I should be selfless.

Shoulds are a terrible way to lead one's life. Shoulds do not constitute a better person, rather an unhappy person. A person who does everything that they should is generally not pleasant to be around.

I think that the main way to become a better person is by loving yourself. if you dont love yourself how can you expect anyone else to love you??..you have to do something that makes you feel better about yourself, such as volunteer, exercise, become a big brother/big sister...etc. anything can be achieved in this world, all you have to do is set your mind on it!!!

Becoming a true believer in God in the main way. This is the absolute path. It's also extremely important to think with your head and your heart--neither one more than the other. Too much heart eclipses common sense and wisdom; too much head-thinking eclipses love and selflessness. Do your best to even it all out. Best advice I can give, anyway.

The 'how' part of it comes much later... first of all do we definitely and unshakably know what it takes to be a good person and do we want definitely and unhesitatingly to be such good person?.... if the answer to both these questions is a firm yes... then the 'how' will take care of itself and we'll find a way.

Understand that one's rationality and emotions are linked, and it is only through the integration of the two that the human will can become detached from ego-driven desires, discern wisdom, and gain clarity in regards to what it means to be virtuous and compassionate.

Conviction.

This is something you could work with:

Fear - Shame - Evil - Faith(Knowledge)

With the conscientious analysis that you will make of these 4 factors you should be able to overcome:

Duality - Polarity - Singularity - Nothing(Knowledge)

And from then on, you will KNOW what to do, but first, you have to do this YOURSELF.

Dare to Know!

GOOD LUCK!
