I feel that the age of concent at 16 is laughably ridioulous. I am a youth rights supporter who supports the abolition of the age of consent laws. Mainly because I feel the goverment has no right to determine when a person is ready for sex. My question is who supports lowering/raising/ or abolition of the 16 year old age of concent law.

i dont think there should be age of consent. younger children have sex all the time. older kids have sex with the ones a year or two younger. most of the time, its consent, but the girls wind up pregnant. then they go and claim they got raped bc they are younger than the age. it just sucks. i am a 17 year old girl and it should be abolished.

I don't think the laws should be abolished, but it would be less confusing if all states agreed on one age. In my state, the age is 16 and I think that's fine. Some of these answers make no sense (Like the ones saying Marriage should be the only time it should be legal for sex, because that means 2 legal adults would be charged with statutory rape even if they're in a relationship). I don't think the age should be lowered or abolished, because it's there for a reason; pedophiles take advantage of kids who don't know what's happening. By the way, I'm nearly 16. Just for the record.

In the UK, the age of consent is 16, but I don't think it would really matter if it was raised or lowered. Those that want to have sex at a young age will probably have sex regardless of the age of consent, and those that don't want to have sex yet won't be convinced to have sex just because the age of consent has been lowered.

I would agree with you that the government has no right to determine when a person is ready for sex, however not many 16 year olds can determine if they are truly ready for sex, and since parents don't take their jobs of parenting as seriously as they should these days, who else is going to step in and protect these young kids? I feel the government has a responsibility to 'pick up the slack' of poor parenting, and in this case that means having a reasonable age of consent law. Personally, I think it should be 18. You're just not as grown up as you might think you are at 16, and sex should be taken more seriously than it is. That's why there are so many teenage moms with no support from their teenage 'boyfriends'. Then the government ends up paying to raise that child.

You can be anything you want, supporter, activist, doesn't matter to me, but I will never support lowering or abolishing age of consent.

The government IS NOT telling us what to do and they don't determine anything, they are just simply enforcing what some messed up parents don't do. A child body is not ready for sex until is done maturing, plus if the government didn't set standards, we would have parents selling their kids for kiddie porn, is that what your intentions are? Perhaps you should be investigated by the FBI.

How dare you think a kid will consent to something they have no maturity to consent to. Most of the people saying that kids have sex as young as 10, I wonder how messed up they are in the head to think they consent because they know. Do you really think those kids are doing it because they really know what they're getting into? or is it that they have been exposed to it by an adult?

Point is, children should be protected, if not by their parents, then by the law.

Sorry to disagree with you, but I will hate to see children exploited for sex legally in a developed country. We already see that in less developed countries, where humans rights are violated left and right.

I think the age consent laws is just another way for the government to control people. 60 years ago girls were getting married when they were 16! In some places in the world girls still are. I think if a girl gets pregnant shes stuck with the consciences and they parents should have either been watching their kids better or they should have put their girls on birth control.

That law was put into play to protect these young girls (and boys) from sexual predators and pedophiles. The whole point of it is if you are 26 then you shouldn't be sleeping with a 12 year old...they do NOT have the mental capacity to even begin to grasp the concept not to mention understand consequence. They give 16 year olds the "right" to consent, but even that has limits...statutory rape for instance. I think it's disgusting that some one would even consider lowering the law...that would make it legal for these teacher to keep sleeping with their 6th graders and for grown adults to pick and chose off playgrounds...what's wrong with you??? The law got there because PARENTS wanted it there. And as a parent of 3 children (4,10 and 11) i would make the law 21 if I could. There are WAY too many babies having babies out there...and too many of them are having these babies with "partners" that are way older and have the brain to know right from wrong...how many more welfare babies are you willing to support with your hard earned tax dollars??? How about petitioning something that would actually make the world a BETTER place....like ABSTINENCE....

I don't support it, sorry. I don't think they should lower or abolish the 16 age limit. If they did and didn't tell people when it is right to have sex, 10 year olds would be having sex left and right. (Like they aren't already.) I think they should raise it to 18 or 21. Or when you leave your parent's house, so you can deal with the consequences yourself.

But no wonder you want it lowered. Your 17 and already have a 3 year old daughter? That means you had her when you were 14 years old. That's way to young, sorry.

The age of consent through history has been a lot lower than today. It was the age of 12 in Britain in the 1800's. It was generally an agreed unspoken rule that when a girl started her periods she was ready to have sex. Girls nowadays have their periods as young as 8 and that is way too young.
I think however nowadays that 14 or 15 should be permissible and definitely no younger.

I think the law of consent is a joke, considering that there are 13 and 14-year-old girls who consent to having sex and then get pregnant. I don't think there is a specific age when you are old enough to have sex. It is a personal choice that you should make when you are mature enough to handle protecting yourself and dealing with the consequences that may occur.
