I'm assuming the 'p' should not be there - a variable would horribly complicate the whole thing...

Forgive me if I'm assuming incorrectly, but this is just simply a matter of finding a common denominator. One can not add fractions without doing that. So we need a number that both 12 and 8 divide into, convert the fraction to that equivalent. The simple way to find that 'common denominator' is to multiply the 2 together (ie 12 x 8 = 96) to get a number that is guaranteed to work, but then divide it down just in case there is a simpler number that still works. 96/2=48, 48/2=24 --see?

7/12 + 5/8p =?

p =8/5*? - 8/5 * 7/12
