My Lockbox is a freeware software application that allows you to password protect whatever file on your computer. The protected folder (lockbox) is hidden from any user and application of your system, including Administrator and System itself. It is impossible to access the lockbox not only from the local computer, but also from the net. The program is extremely easy to use. You can set the lockbox location and the password during the setup procedure. After the setup is done, lockbox will be hidden and locked until you enter the valid password. You could also store all of your confidential data in one folder, right click on the folder, and fill in the "Hidden" check box. Then in Windows Explorer select Tools, Folder Options, View and make sure "Do not show hidden files" is selected. This won't password protect but it will hide files. Just an idea.

I'm sure others suggestions would work.. However, I've personally found 3rd party software a bit too unreliable for most uses. My suggestion is a decent and reliable way to secure files is to go ahead and .ZIP them using a password. While it is possible for others to see your files names listed in your .ZIP archive, they cannot access them unless they have the password.

Using Windows XP, you can create a profile for each user. Then set the securities for your My Documents and no one else will be able to see them.
