I can barely understand why CCTV is used. The simple fact is that it is no sound replacement for the police, the evidence is used AFTER an offecne has been committed, it makes people (the general public, not shop owners) feel insecure....and now they want TALKING CCTV? Why? What good will that possibly do? It seems 1984 is not on the way, but it is already here. The government has taken a new policy of predicting children likely to commit criminal offences in the future, and restricts their civil rights, before they are even BORN....whats next? CCTV in our homes? Scanners that predict our violent thoughts? Xray scanners on streets? Why is this happening?

Unfortunately, many people will use the line "if you aren't doing anything wrong then you have nothing to hide". The concept of privacy just doesn't register with these people. Have you ever seen the maps from Google Earth? Those pictures are in the visible range. Just imagine what the government has available to them. We are all pretty much living in a glass jar. With cellphones able to track your whereabouts, cameras on most intersections and in orbit. The only thing that is giving us any tiny bit of privacy is the fact that there is so much information collected that nobody can sort through it all.

Mustagme, tell the watchers to obey the rules. The Bill of rights was not added to the constitution to be ignored. If you and GWBush want the first ten amendments to the Constitution repealed, then get working on it through the rules, not by Emporor's Edict.
But as for the original question, I would like to know where that information is coming from. I try to pay pretty close attention to the news, and haven't heard about pre-natal profiling yet.

Actually, "Talking" CCTV can be an effective way to deter criminals. Take this example:

A potential thief walks onto a car lot after hours. A voice comes over and says "hello, thank you for coming by, please feel free to look, but we will not be open again until tomorrow morning. That's a nice blue shirt by the way".

The person then knows someone is watching and makes the decision not to steal parts or a car.

This is needed in the post 9/11 world to ensure Americans are kept safe. And if you are doing nothing wrong, why worry? Obey the laws and you will be fine.
