There is a mild pinch to a dull ache at the time of injection. The best thing she can do is to turn away so she can't see it happening, to relax (tight muscles make for more painful injections), and take a deep breath and close her mind for the few seconds that it takes.

After the injection, she may have some achy spots or soreness; she can treat this with either an ice pack or a heating pad (or both alternating). Tylenol or Motrin will help as well. The pain will typically ease within a day or two, unless it was deep-muscle shot, in which case she might have a few more days of discomfort.

We've all been through it...and we've all survived. :-)

You know, deep breathing is good for lots of things and it works for getting shots too. The deep breathing that women do while giving birth is ideal. In the late stages of birth the doctor says " stop pushing" and then you just blow out air, you know, pant like a dog. I use that method all the time for pain too horrible to bear like breaking a toe, etc. Good luck to your friend.

there is no pain from getting shots. slight discomfort is felt for about a second, shots are nothing to fear.
