Presumably you have the power to push a good game.. so I'd recommend the following:

FEAR (first encounter assault response) - one of the 'self proclaimed' scariest shooters ever published. And I'd have to say I agree.. there are startle points in the game. But not really a feeling of foreboding unless you're a crouch-sneak-n-lean type FPS player.. for the run-n-gunners out there, this was just mildly annoying at times.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadows of Chernobyl. I wouldn't say this was scary.. per se. Until you're out in a strange area without any idea which way you were supposed to be going, surrounded by anomolies and in pitch-darkness.. and then there's a growl.. yea, ok it's pretty scary. Also a GREAT game to mod even for beginners.

Clive Barker's Undying - This was, as I recall, a very scary game.. it had startle points and was one of the first PC games i can remember that used the music and ambient light to create scary situations... a very foreboding game. Reminded me, at times, of the haunted house in Disney world.. haha.

Silent HIll ? - Some people say this is a scary game.. I never really felt it was though.. just wasn't believable enough.

At any rate, those would be my contenders on the list.

Have fun!

My vote would have to be for FEAR and Doom 3. I couldn't play either alone, late at night. Doom 3 had the whole package though. Scary voices coming out of nowhere, references to the devil, things jumping out at you, and a completely dark environment sometimes was just soooo scary to play at night!

I think it would be S.T.A.L.K.E.R and Left 4 Dead.
