cant open thumbdrive! when i click on the removable drive icon, msg appears asking me to go to control panel to install and configure system components.. HELP! what should i do? i need the info inside..

cant open thumbdrive! when i click on the removable drive icon, msg appears asking me to go to control panel to install and configure system components.. HELP! what should i do? i need the info inside..

i right clicked and pressed open. it worked. however can you pls explain why this is happening? yesterday when i plugged the thumbdrive in there was no such prob. is there a virus? just now when i 1st plug in the thumbdrive there was a msg saying my antui-virus programme had taken care of the virus.

What operating system do you have? If it's earlier than XP, chances are it won't recognize a thumb drive unless you download the driver from the thumb drive's manufacturer.

EDIT: Depending on the maker of the drive, you might still need to install a driver, even though you have XP. But as long as it works, just cancel out of the "install components" message box that comes up, and life goes on.

If you get a chance, try a different thumb drive (if possible, from a different manufacturer) and see if the same thing happens. If everything works fine with the second drive, then what you've been seeing is just a quirk of that specific drive and/or manufacturer. This isn't something you HAVE to do, it would just be interesting to know because it would tell whether it's just the one thumb drive having problems with your computer or it's your computer having problems with thumb drives in general.

Open My Computer and right click on the thumb drive. Now click open. That should open the drive so that you can see the data that is stored on it.
