A simple answer is... history and memory.

Philosophically though, time that is past does not go anywhere... it is the same time that is continuously evolving into future... as it evolves, new and different events take place. Every bit of past is right here and now since the 'right here and now' is the result of every bit of past that has happened.

it turns into fossil fuels. that's why we'll never run out of oil. hurray for time and the law of conservation of mass.
