Yes it is legit. I came from a financial background before Mary Kay I worked for a Large Financial Company in the Phila area. I was very sceptical loved the prodcut and did some reseach sure there are lots of site out there that can scare you but get the facts and decide based on them.
The company was founded in 1963 buy a women who was tired of working hard for someone else and not getting anywhere she was writing a book on what she would do if she owned her own business and realized it was a business plan. She was recognized as the greatest female entrepreneur of American History. Her business plan is now taught at Harvard
Mary Kay is not a multi-level company it is a dual-marketing company. That means, you do not have to wait for a middle-man or third person to pay you, you are paid directly from the company when it comes to commissions. Profit is paid immediately at the time of the sale.
Mary Kay Ash was the first one in the industry to STOP testing on animals and Mary Kay cosmetics has the safest products on the market.
Oh and the $100 is your starter Kit it gives you over $300 in full size products DVD,CD and other training materials plus business and skin care class supplies. Please feel free to email me if you have any additional question I can answer for you.

I don't know about the $100.00 fee, but Mary Kay is not just "a legitimate business," it is BIG BUSINESS.
The founder, Mary Kay Ashley started with nothing and built a major cosmetic empire. Along the way, she helped many women become millionaires.
I don't know at what level it is given, but at some point in sales production, Mary Kay gives sales people a pink Cadillac. I've seen several folks driving them so I know that isn't hype.
If you decide to become a Mary Kay Rep, you can make a good living if you work hard. It isn't money for nothing, but you can make money with Mary Kay.
Good Luck,
Doc Hudson

Well Mary Kay has been around for yearsssss..... and years... so yes it is a very legitimate business... If you are good at selling and are a people person it will be easy to succeed.. and you get to make your own hours.. its not like the tradidtional 9-5...
And yes it would cost something to start up...Do you think they are going to just give everyone products to sell.... imagine thier point of view...How many people probably tried to sell Mary Kay... but are not GOOD SALES people... should the company loose out.. because u cant sell...??? What if you never returned the products that you didnt sell?? I think they are looking at it like... if you are willing to invest $100 into your own future , your more likley to take the job serious... Basically they "sell" you a starter kit... so you have items on hand that are usually popular to help you get off of the ground.. .after that... your sales orders should surpass that 100bucks... if you are doing it correctly. I know of many who have made money on Mar yKay and AVON. But it takes being a GOOD sales person.... Otherwise that job would not be for you.

mary kay has been around for over 30 years. I used to work for mary kay many years ago. the kit is $100- that is full of the makeup that mary kay sells. The makeup and skin care is very high quality and a good business to get into if you have the time to hold the shows to sell the product.

Maria, Mary Kay is the #1 skin care and color cosmetic company in America. It's been in business for almost 44 years and is a billion $$$ company. I would suggest you talk to your independent beauty consultant about the business if you're interested. The $100 fee is for your starter kit that provides you with over $300 in retail product to do your initial facials with plus mirrors and training material. There is an additional investment if you want product on hand to sell to your customers after they've tried the product. MK also has a 90% buy back guarantee on their products for their independent sales force. If you choose this route, you can't come back into the company again after you resell the products back to the company, which I believe is fair b/c they have to destroy all of that product when it comes back to them....they can't resell it to another consultant. MK, Inc is founded on basic Christian principles and it's a wonderful company to be associated with. I, myself, have been a consultant for 8 years and have loved every minute of it! :-) If you'd like further informaition, I'd be happy to help you. Feel free to email me stephsmk@yahoo.com

Personally, I don't think its worth it. I don't know anyone who has done well with Mary Kay, and I don't think you need to put down that much money up front to start a successful business.
Now, I do sell Avon, and to each his/her own, because some brands just aren't for everyone. Avon was only $10 to start, and the company has been around for 120 years, they know their stuff :)

Mark Kay is legitimate, but it does cost you a lot of money upfront, and you're responsible for finding and keeping your own customers.
It's a lot of work and you'll become annoying to everyone you know, always trying to sell them stuff. I wouldn't do it.
Plus, I think you have to buy all the merchandise upfront, then resell it. If you don't sell it, you're out the money.

Don't think of it in terms of 41 deductions, think of it in terms of what am I spending to further my business. Those are the items that are deductible. Costs for travel, marketing, meetings, lunches, etc. Save all your receipts, and have a tax professional help you. Depending on the business, you may only be able to deduct up to your gains. So if you make $1,000 in sales, you can only deduct $1,000 in losses. See a tax professional.
