Yes, go to a home depot, or similar, ask for phimika (sp?) Its a thin surface material that can be placed over the existing surface. It comes in large sheets but they can probably cut it down for you. It will also be available in various colors and styles.

Sounds like you have a photographed surface on the desk. This process is also used in cheap paneling. You can purchase veneer products at Home Centers or lumber yards. It is just a thin wood that you can glue down. You could also use a laminate surface such as what is on countertops. Use a good contact cement and follow the directions on the container.
