yes you can, go to a route 66 wedsite and they will show you current routes (for the most part) you may even be able to grive with other people at the same time. 66 is well marked in Illinois and is very easy to follow (basically I-55) to St. Louis. I'm not sure what Hajgora7 thinks Rt. 66 is, but there is no need for guns or big dogs, there is no more wild west. I drive on 66 at least once every 2 weeks. It's middle America at its best.

No you can not. Rt. 66 was delisted as a Federal Highway many years ago. Pavement was ripped up, bridges torn down. You can follow the general path via other routes. Many towns along the original route, in their desire to attract tourists have kept up small sections of the roadway you can travel on. Go to a bookstore and pickup one of the many books written about the Highway. Also "goole" Route 66, Route 66 Association, for much information.

Straight answer: no as some of the old highway doesn't exist any more.

Still you can travel some of the old highway, but much of it is now either interstate or abandoned. You can and will get some of the old feel of those that went before. Visit the Route 66 website for maps and directions.

Absolutely yes. Bring a spare tire or two, and make sure you have AAA or some insurance for your vehicle and your trailer. A shotgun and a handgun with plenty of ammunition would also not be a bad thing to have. And a big dog.

Bon voyage!
