If the parking brake is off you probably have low brake fluid in the master cylinder reservoir. Have the brakes checked, on most cars it's time for brakes when the fluid gets low enough to trigger the light. If all that is OK you have another problem with the brakes that needs diagnosing. If the brake pedal feels different, just go to a garage and get them checked before they fail.

You don't have to back up against a window. A regular wall or garage door will show whether your lights are coming on. And your car doesn't have to be running or in a certain gear. Your brake lights come on anytime you step on the brake.

You can try waiting until it is dark, backing into a corner and looking for the reflection. Other than that, turn on the battery, put a good sized rock on the brake, then get out and look for yourself. If you are scared about the car moving, put on the parking brake as well.

Put the car in park and lean a brick or heavy object against the pedal. It does not have to go all the way to the floor just enough to place some pressure on the pedal.

while your car is parked, rest a brick on your brake pedal...it should be enough weight to compress the pedal & make your brake lights come on...then just go check 'em out!

I would back up to a store/ garage... something with a light colored wall.. when its starting to get dusky... ( early evening) press on your breaks.. if you see red lights on both sides of the vechile reflecting on the wall then you are ok... if one side lights then you know which one doesnt work.. same for your blinkers... OR
Go to the auto parts store... usually someone will come out and help you figure it out , so you dont buy the wrong blub.

Back up to a store front that is all glass and look in the mirror while you apply the brakes or signals.

at night back up close to a wall, like garage or house, turn your headlights off, hit the brakes, you should see the glow on the wall behind you
