had a friend tell me to change out the stainless steel bolts on my car tow bar set up as they were "softer " than mild steel and to put grade 5 or 8 in place. I know 5 or 8 are good, I thought that s s was stronger and harder than mild steel bolts, which is why I changed to them

Whatever steel bolts you use in your towbar will do the job. Shearing a tightly held bolt in a close tolerance hole would be pretty much impossible in that circumstance. If those bolts were to shear, there will be other things going on that will take precedence, like your vehicle flipping over.

Grade 5 Stainless Steel Bolts

Grade refers to the hardness of the bolt not the strength

"It is a common misconception that stainless steel is stronger than regular steel. In fact, due to the low carbon content, stainless steel cannot be hardened. Therefore when compared with regular steel it is slightly stronger than an un-hardened (grade 2) steel fastener but significantly weaker than hardened steel fasteners."

So when you want the softer grade 2 stainless steel is stronger but when you want harder grades (5, 8, alloy) go with mild steel.

Jim as far as the tinsel strength of the bolts, that is left up to the pro's, and you can probably find that out at the hdwr store, but the stainless just gives you the added protection of a clean bolt for out door weather, no rust and can get the nuts off and on with ease each time you use them.
I try to use them on my backhoes, implements and towing gear that are outside my Newmar 5th whl.

Stainless steel bolts are not necessarily harder or stronger than other bolts--it depends on what grade they. SS bolts simply are made to resist corrosion. Check this site for grade markings and associated strengths of the various bolts

Stainless is a lot stronger, and you have the added benefit of not having to worry about rust.

Fill the pot up w/cold water to cover the burned on rice. Bring it up to a boil. Do it again w/some high powered soap in the mix. This time let the water sit in the pan until its luke warm, dump it out and scrub it up w/the plastic scouring pad. You should be all set.
