Starting with:

(x + 5)² = 3

Take the square root of both sides (remembering that square roots can be positive or negative):

x + 5 = ± √3

And then subtract 5 from both sides to get your answer:

x = -5 ± √3

First, multiply it out: (x+5)^2=x^2+10x+25
Substract three from both sides:
x^2 + 10x+22=0

Use the quadratic equation:
x=(-10+-sqrt(100-88))/2
x=-5 +-sqrt(12)/2= -5+-sqrt(3)

The answers given by others is correct. Just be sure to do +/-... if the sqrt was given already, the answer would be positive but because you are taking the sqrt, you have to include both solutions.

x= -5 +/-sqrt(3)

(x+5)^2 = 3
x + 5 = +/- sqrt(3)
x = -5 +/- sqrt(3)

Another way, when you aren't working with squares:

(x^2 + 10x + 25) = 3
x^2 + 10x + 22 = 3

x = (-10 +/- sqrt(100-88))/2 =
(-10 +/- sqrt(12))/2 =
(-10 +/- 2 * sqrt(3))/2 =
-5 +/- sqrt(3)
