People had good-paying seasonal jobs that allowed them to get by out of season. Per capita income was similar to Mississippi - something no other Central American/Caribbean nation was true for. Government was Oligarchy with a dictator like much of the area at the time. Tourism was a major industry and prostitution was a big industry. Education was poor. Overall, the people were much better off then under Castro and the rest of the area but still not all that good.

it is best described as vegas when the mob ran it. yes alot of casino, yes any vice you want could be found. but there was freedom to move through classes and make something for yourself. there were very little political persecution (no more then any south american country) and it had a strong growing economy. the governmenr was not the best in the world but i was better then anything else i can think of in the carribean.
