lol, I am old also. My son explained it to me. Ppl who dress in black, are generally depressed and sometimes harm themselves by cutting. Also several piercing are usually involved. I think it can be any combination of these things that makes a person EMO and I think that is short for emotional as in unbalanced (i'm not positive on this one) .

emo describes a kind of music (and the people that listen to it) - generally moody stuff
the stereotypical 'emo kid' wears black, and sometimes black eyeliner.
