Emo is short for emotional. That's the literal meaning, but the connotation it carries is one of a group of people who have a style that's close to gothic (Goth). They wear black and keep their hair over their face and listen to certain kinds of music. It's just a little subculture defined mainly by clothing, personal style and music choices consistant with dark, depressed, "emotional".
