One of my co-workers heard on the local news last night that 8 planetary bodies were in alignment last night, the Earth, our moon, the sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. They also said that this alignment is very rare and won't happan again for over 400 years. I normally don't have any problem finding more information on things she or anyone else hears about, but I only find one place online that this event is mentioned, which was on another news stations' website (not local): http://www.wrcbtv.com/news/index.cfm?sid=8455
Maybe I'm not looking in the right place, or maybe it was a hoax, but you'd think that there would have been a bigger deal made of this if it were true. I couldn't even find anything on NASA.gov or Space.com about it, although they mention several times in the last 10 years when 6 bodies were in line, but that's less rare. Would love any information proving or disproving the supposed alignment last night. Thanks!!!

I don't know where that news story you cited came from, but it's dead wrong..! Take a look at this website which shows the current alignment of solar system planets. You can play around with the date / time yourself to get a feel for what passed and future alignments will be ==>http://www.fourmilab.ch/cgi-bin/Solar

There was no special alignment last night. Venus was really close to the Moon and made a nice sight last night, but all those other planets were scattered all over they sky.

Honestly, where do people come up with all these alignments? The term alignment doesn't even have a meaning in astronomy anyway. There are conjunctions, oppositions, and other things, but nothing called an alignment. What would that even mean?

Since all planets orbit the sun, the alignment if it had happened would have been of seven bodies, however, its wrong.

I hadn`t heard anything about it at all...I did some Googleing myself and didnt see any mention either. Suprised that something like that wouldn`t have been more news worthy.
