DNA scientists have found a “Moral/ Ethical” DNA strand which they’ve nicknamed the “God” gene. Just like DNA produces blond hair, or brown hair … so too with the “God” gene determines a persons moral behavior. However, I still believe that “Nurture” plays a bigger part than DNA and a pre-determined fate.

We are all born survivors. We do anything we can to get what we want. We are taught to do without later. We are taught how to interact with society to get what we want. It's all about us as individuals and getting what we need by any means. Later we learn of morals, codes, laws, and all the human trappings that go along with life. When your born and you cry someone shuts you up by changing your diaper, or feeding you, or burping you. If you get what you want whenever you cry why stop as a child? Some adults still cry to get what they want. If you teach a child to do something else besides to cry for what they want they will use this instead. Layer upon layer we learn how to manipulate or world around us to get what we want. There is no innocence in that.

Dear Miss Madame S :
Excellent question being posted ! Unlike the good approach given by Guru and Trillium above, I do believe semantics should come into play here...
If You define "INNOCENCE" as a synonymous of "IGNORANCE", then there are two branches: orthodox (occidental) cultures believe that No knowledge or earlier experiences are transferred upon birth, while many Asian cultures, religions or philosophies believe We actually "re-incarnate" therefore, bearing lots of memories from the earlier / past life We had...
Now, LEARNING INNOCENCE is really much more interesting, as it goes directly into the field of enlightening...
Hopefully this throws an interesting pitch and flaming thougth to Your "seemingly innocent" question...
Good luck! Bear hugs! ;-)

By the time of birth, we have already learned somethings during our time inside the womb. Innocence is not a state of mind. It is a judgement by others whether it be a court, a person or a group of people. If by innocence you mean we are born without the knowlege of evil, wrong, or bad thoughts, then we are born innocent. We have to learn evil or good thoughts from others.

We are born innocent, and then we learn from our surroundings and environment, which, of course, leaves us totally screwed up for the rest of our lives.

The moment one finds his or her out of the womb, he (or she) is as innocent as a red rose bloom. And as beautiful A baby only does three things: sleeps, eats, and one other. Along the way, as we all crawl towards the inevitable, death, the ups and downs and the bumps in the night rob some of us the innocence of a child. Those of us who are fortunate retain more than a little bit of our childhood awe and wonder and sweetness and joy. For example, me. And I hope you too.
