I used to barge in before my mom remarried. Now I actually knock on the door and wait (like a visitor).

I don't have a car since I live in NYC so my mom has to get me from the train station. I can't easily surprise her. If I borrowed a car, I'd call first then knock.

I use the "shave and a haircut, two bits" knock so they know it's me, then walk right in. They do the same at my house.

I still knock. Then they always ask why I do, they tell me just to come right in! I guess it's just a habit.

I knock, only because my mom has a mean little ankle biter that hates me. She has to put him somewhere before I will go in. If the ankle biter is outside, I just walk in.
