Why do you think people are still interested/fascinated by the Madeleine Smith alleged crime and trial after 150 years? Especially when, I’m sure, other supposed murder crimes that had more victims and were probably more gruesome than one and that nobody really knows of today?

She was about 21, the eldest daughter of a wealthy Glasgow architect and was accused of poisoning her lower-class lover Emile L'Angelier in 1857. Books are still being writted about her - 4 books came out about the case in 2007.

I had never heard of Madeleine Smith before this, so I googled her name and read the story. One writer compared her to Lizzie Borden and I think that's probably the source of the fascination. Female murderers are so much rarer than males, then add to that the lack of a conclusive verdict...
