You can use a laptop with WiFi with a wireless router and any type of internet, but it is easiest with broadband like cable or DSL.

If you want to use dial up (is that what you mean by "highspeed"?), you will either need (1) an external modem which can connect to the internet and a router or (2) an internal modem in another computer and use this computer to "bridge" to the router using its ethernet connection (NIC card) output to the router. I have done the second one here and it was fairly easy but very slow.

Since DSL is down to around $15 in most large markets, this would be the cheap way to go. Just set it up directly to your laptop, then disconnect and plug it into the router and set it up with security to your laptop.

I have set up several Linksys routers for people and they are very easy and seem reliable.

Good Luck.
