Although there are lots of discounts and groups who will consider you a Senior citizen before age 65, the Federal Government of the USA considers you as a Senior only after attaining age 65.

At age 65, the things that count most come into play, such as full Social Security benefits, Medicare, prescription plans and the like.

AARP lowers the age simply to get you to pay their fees, that's just a money driven policy which enlists your $$$ and it is often the case that other similar lowered ages are for purposes of gaining your patronage.

But you're not FULLY entitled till age 65.

You can join AARP and get some benefits such as discounted insurances at age 50. Usually at 50 you can get benefits such as store discounts also. However, as far as the government is concerned, you would be entitled to retirement benefits at age 62. Full retirement age is 67. If you were to qualify for medicare, you can do so at age 65. It is expected that in the future, there will not be enough money in the Social Securuty fund to pay projected benefit amounts, so the government can change the age.

I live in a senior apt. building, a Jr. Senior who is disabled and 55 or over can move in here. If you aren't disabled you need to be 62 years old. Most restaurants give a senior discount at age 55. I am 58.
