I have a 96 Monte Carlo (Chevy)...and lately it's been slipping or sputtering while running, for example, i'll be going 65mph on the freeway when all of sudden my rpms jump from 2 to 3... what might cause that? It only does it at random too... sometimes it will do it , others it won't..?? any ideas??

One possibility is that the transmission's Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid is malfunctioning and causing the overdrive lockup gear to switch in and out when it shouldn't. This is an especially common problem on GM transmissions of earlier vintage. Normally, when your driving at high speed in overdrive and you touch the brake pedal, the transmission automatically shifts from overdrive to drive in many cases. Try pushing the brake pedal down and see if the tachometer jumps up as you say when the TCC switches from Overdrive to Drive. So you could also have a faulty brake switch signal going to the transmission. The repair shouldn't be all that complicated or expensive (see link below).

Transmission slipping if your RPM suddenly increases, may be a filter, low fluid, or torque converter stopped up.

if it is a standard shift, your clutch is going out. have it repaired before u get stranded. if it is auto, the tranny is going out too. enjoy the bowtie.
