I would like to build birdhouses. I've decided the best way to start is by purchasing kits, then later on to design and build my own. Is there an online store you can recommend? Does Lowes, Home Depot, Target, or Walmart carry birdhouse kits? Which kit company do you recommend? And, if I'm going to design and create my own birdhouses in the future, what kinds of tools and machinery will I need? Finally, what kinds of paint should I buy that will resist weather? Thanks for all your help.

Here is one http://www.thebirdhousedepot.com/

I recommend getting a book on the subject. That's how my son and his friends at the group home started theirs, and they make a pretty good living from it. But like any craft, you do have to have something unique about yours that nobody else has. Bird-nblooms magazine is a good resource for builders/designers.

Any outdoor-grade varnish will work.
