I have idiopathic thorastic scoliosis which means ( unknown cause of curvature of the spine in the thorasic area)
They only found out by accident that I had a curved spine when I hurt my hip at school and had to go to hospital.
I had to wear a body brace for 6months only to find it had made it worse and I had to have a spinal fusion and metal rods inserted. I have a perfectly straight back now that I can't bend ( I can bend from the hips but my spine wont curve to shape my shoulders if you see what I mean) and everyone thinks I do yoga lol. This was 9 years ago. The surgeon said some cases are a complete mystery and at times can be unavoidable.
But certainly maintaining a straight posture and carrying weight evenly across your back, like a heavy bag, or carrying a child evenly across your body, will together help keep your spine as healthy as possible. Also when picking up heavy things from the ground, bend from the knees.
I'd get someone to check your spine regularly if your concerned because no one knew about my spine until it was too far gone.

Well first off scolisis is an abnormal curve of the spine. Now, this can happen from having poor posture or carrying too much weight on one's back. Both of these put a lot of strain and pressure on the back or more specifically the spine and it may utimately change its orginal curve. The best things to do are things that will not harm the spine like sitting right and bending to pick up things properly.

1. Maintain good posture at all times.
2. Get plenty of calcium.
3. Exercise.
That said, some people are genetically predisposed to it. All the above will still help, but may not guarantee success in preventing this. Discuss it with your doctor for further information.

Scoliosis (idiopathic) is caused by genetic and unknown environmental trigger mechanism...so there's no preventing.
What you need to do is to get screened regularly so that it can be caught early on. With today's advancements in nonsurgical procedures, it is correctible if treated early enough...
