Patz ~

In Brazil, some of the best choices, among large cities, are Curitiba, considered to be the Brazilian city with the best quality of life; and Porto Alegre, both in the South; Brasilia (Brazil's capital) and Belo Horizonte, in the Southeast and central regions; and Salvador, in the Northeast.

I absolutely love São Paulo, where I was born and grew up, and lived for many years, as an adult. It is and will always be home, for me. And Rio de Janeiro is amazingly beautiful. But both cities are huge, which brings many problems. Still, they are wonderful places, and their citizens love to live there. :)

And you have many cities that are big but not so much, where you can live very well. Vila Velha and Vitória (so close to each other that they are "almost the same city") are good examples of those. :)

i think aron1968 is on the right track...

good restaurants!! not just the usual fast food places (but a wide variety of them is handy) but also some quirky places featuring local cuisine and talents.

an arts community.... music, theatre, sculpture, architecture. beautiful surroundings give rise to inspired thinking and civil behavior. a few good radio stations. also, a desire to learn... libraries, an affinity for reading... bookstores! colleges!

nice scenery. a pleasing setting, for me, with trees, water, and a successful meshing of the city and its physical environment. this puts me at ease and makes me feel comfortable, when man and nature exist in peace together.

an invigorating climate that mirrors the changing of the seasons... and access to those things that change WITH the seasons. i need an occasional escape from man's world, or i get grumbly.

all these things go into making a city 'home' to me. in america, here are some 'good' choices among large cities... san francisco. denver. minneapolis. boston. 'bad' ones... los angeles. miami. houston. washington. how about in YOUR country??

I guess the length of time I've been in it has to count for something. I've only been in St. Louis for three months, and so it only partly feels like home. But that part is eager to be more at home, because it really is a grand place. Actually, I'm in University City, a part of St. Louis County, but not literally St. Louis the city. The people are friendly, it's a culturally very diverse place, there are good places to shop within walking distance, and many more interesting places within reach of a reasonably good bus system (I don't drive). There are lovely restaurants with reasonable prices and good food, there are parks everywhere, and it's a marvelous place for people who love interesting architecture.

A city feels like home if it is good to the sort of person you are. I have a lot of curiosity, an interest in art and music and history and such, and this city is great for that sort of thing.

Have I answered the question, or just told you why I like St. Louis?

A lake, so I can sit there and comtemplate life. Parks. Several of my favorite fast food take out places. A good craft store. A shopping mall, and a small local grocery store. Trains.... I've never lived where I cant hear trains.

I have moved around a lot over the years. For a city to feel like home to me it has to have the following:

A used book store
A new book store
An excellent Chinese food source... deli or restaurant
A good place to get a sub sandwich
A good used CD store

And finally.......... you have to make friends that are a part of the city that you are living in. If not, I always feel like a stranger there.
