Do our characters stay with us permanently until we die or what?

Very young people will tell you that character will always stay the same, but the older and more experienced answerers are sure that experiences in life do mold your character significantly. The basic core and disposition of a human being is less likely to change, but the nuances of character which are visible to our daily contacts will change to accomodate the changes in our lives. We're lucky if we're able to adapt to our environment and experiences, otherwise our age will never reflect our wisdom.

Well - I am 49 so can answer from the point of view of watching people I went to High School with get older. A number of them stayed the same until middle age - then watch out - I think they suddenly realised that they were half way or more through their lives, and were not happy with the lives they had built - they turned into angry selfish driven people as they tried to turn things around. Another friend who I had lost contact with at 20 was then a happy go lucky person who you would have expected to live most of his life in a caravan doing menial jobs - he has ended up wealthy and focussed, fit and philisophical. Another friend is just the same, just paunchier, but he loved his comics as a kid, and still does.

Our character does change as the years pass us by, sometimes for the better sometimes not! Our character changes because of experiences we have gone through and had to face in our lives!

our character stays its our motives and intentions that changes, although a persons character can be easily influenced but that doesnt mean that the person has changed.
deep down the persons true identity is hidden when emotionally disturbed wether by peer pressure etc. and somehow we usually find our way back home, therefore character stays until death. but dear ofcourse this is only my opinion i hope it helps.

As you get older, and go through both positive and negative experiences, your charectar is shaped by it all. A badly broken heart in your 30's can change your entire personality. You don't have to be a kid to have life altering experiences.

Absolutely, if you do any personal reflection at all.

I am not the man I was when I was 18, nor am I the man I'll be when I'm 70. Our experiences are constantly molding us.
