1) Akira - The movie that set the standard for animation which still holds its own against stuff today.
2) Highlander - high cheezy factor, bad scottish accents, dodgy special effects, but a bunch of immortals going round having sword fights in ealry 80s Manhatten... gotta love it.
3) Gattaca - a preview of a future where kids are genetically engineered rather than born.
4) American Beauty - the comic self destruction of a middle aged man.
5) The Shawshank Redemption - the most uplifting film you'll ever see. No ones ever been a more deserving escapee than Andy Dufreyne.

Haven't seen Akira but have heard it is REALLY good.
Haven't seen Highlander but liked the tv series.
Have seen a few minutes of Gattaca and I liked it.

I saw Highlander and Shawshank Redemption.

Highlander was ok - best scenes - the battle in the beginning when MacLeod gets "killed" and the fight with Ramirez in the castle.

Shawshank was great, but I like the Steven King book better.

I've seen them all. I loved Akira. Highlander & Gattaca, but I think the other two are over rated.
