i'm getting a laptop and printer - what do i have to do to with them to be able to print?

Get yourself a USB to Parallel cable, they're not exactly cheap costing around £20, but shop around.

If your printer has a USB connection that would be the simplest way to connect it.

Usually laptops do not come with an LPT port, so you can get an LPT>USB converter and connect your printer through the converter to the USB port.

check out the HP 2570 series of AIO printers

they have USB and Ethernet cable connections (wired network)

The Ethernet can be hooked to a wireless router and then everyone in the house can use it even wireless Laptops print to it , Simple
