I have a chainmail rosette that I want to affix to a leather strap to make a choker necklace and I can't figure out the best way to get it to fasten on securely (so it doesn't flop around).

Does anyone know how to do this or (better yet) know where I can get some instructions on working with leather?

Thanks.

I suppose you could punch a couple of small holes in the leather with an awl and lash the rosette on with some strong thread. You may be able to sew it on without punching holes, but you will definitely want to look for a glover's needle (a type of needle with a very sharp triangular point). A glover's needle will be much easier to puncture the leather than just a regular hand sewing needle and you can find them at pretty much any craft store that has hand sewing needles.

Or maybe you could find some rivets or studs with a long enough post to go through the chainmail and a top piece that won't slip through the holes in the chainmail?? These would probably be more visible than some inconspicuous stitches, though. Hope this helps.

At the craft store, look for large jump rings. Poke some holes in the leather and use the jump rings to join the leather to the chainmail.

Go to:

http://tandyleatherfactory.com

Look at their store locator (locations). Find a store near you. Go there.
The people that work there generally know their stuff, and have the materials on hand.
Also, many stores have leather craft classes.
