Well, the name should NOT be Hindustan, because I am an Indian and not a Hindu, and the name Hindustan gives the impression that this land belongs to only to Hindus. It excludes millions of people and that isn't fair. Besides, the constitution of India declares it to be a secular nation; therefore, the name shouldn't favor one religion as Hindustan clearly does.
As for changing the name to Bharat...well, why? Other countries have an "official" name that is different from what people call it in their native language. China is called Zhongguo in Mandarin Chinese, Japan is also called Nihon or Nippon, Germany is called Deutschland. So India can be both India and Bharat. And it's not like India was completely made up by the British; it comes from the Indus river.
And changing the country's name officially to Bharat would involve a lot of red tape, and I think many Indian people would still refer to it as India in everyday language, the way a lot of institutions in Bombay have kept that name (for example, the Bombay Stock Exchange hasn't been changed to Mumbai Stock Exchange) and some people still call it Bombay. So changing it to Bharat probably would not make much of a difference, other than causing hassle due to having to update textbooks and maps and other documents.

Bharat varsh was a name of the country whose borders spread from present Afghanistan to Myanmar. That Bharat has been divided into many countries. If we change the name to Bharat, the neighbouring countries will accuse us of expanding our ambitions to capture their land. India is well recognised name. Why bother changing it and educating the world the reason for a new name. As far as Pakistanis calling it Hindustan, they want to identify India by a religion. India is a secular country where people of all faith enjoys freedom. Some may be receiving preferential treatment but the majority never complains about it. Hindustan sounds good but it has a tone of Arabic language.

Yes I think we have to change our country name from India to Hindustan or Bhart. Our country name was Aryabart which had been changed to Bhart and then Hindustan by our ancestors. When British people come to Hindustan they changed it to India, they do not feel convenient to represent our country as Bharat or Hindustan because it remind our history. Now we are independent and have our democracy. So why should we have to accept the name given by Britishers ??? We should accept the name of our country given by our ancestors such as Bharat or Hindustan.

Good Question. It is very appropriate to change the name to Bharat or Hindustan.I guess we are already referring India as Bharat in our official Hindi correspondence. But we should not forget we are a secular country !!! Non Hindus and Non Hindi speaking community will not appreciate it. We are now living in an era where humans have become over sensitive on every issue. It is sad sometimes to think majority has no say in any matter.
To my mind this is a very trivial issue which can be kept in the back burner for now or may be forever.

Our country was called INDIA by british because of Indus valley civilization. But only few people know that our country was named after Indus valley civilization. In America,Indian means the native americans who were living by killing and eating buffalos(see the INTO THE WEST movie or Dances with wolves). So for americans Indian means uncivilized.
Changing the names of our cities were useless, but we can change our country name, why should we follow the british, can't we name our own country?
But at this time, i don't think it is possible to change the India's name to some other name because of so called secularism.
I always had this in my mind to change India's name to Hindustan.
If that is the case, we can call Indian Airlines as Hindustan Airlines and Indians as Hindustanis.
But, does muslims of India agree to be called Hindustanis?
Jai Hind
Hindustani

Hindustan.. that is one of the most historic and widely used terms.. India is more of a European/Western term. Even in Bharat is fine but Hindustan rocks!

Long time ago India was a island called
Jumbudweep. This land mass moved northwords and hit the other land mass, and the result is formation of himalayas.Geologists find debris of sea animals and shells etc. in the himalayas.
Also in our vedic mantras we start
Jumbudweepe....bharatakhande.. etc,
to give our location from where we are praying. Also I say , Godavari , Krishna ,
madhya bhage ie, land mass between godavari river and krishna river, as I hail from that place. So we have lot of options but no point in changing as the mantras clearly specify our location when we invoke God.Presently I am in Usa and may be my priest suitbly modifies when ever I pray.
When hindu culture was at its peak there was no pakistan or Britan .Let us use our original thinking if at all a change is required.
No time now to waste on name changing.

Well INDIA as now can not be called as Hindusthan or Bharat due to many reasons .. i will try to put some of them
here .........
1. As the name HINDUSTAN tells us .. the land of hindus ...
it cannot be spelled here due to secularism and we have many more religions along with Hindus.
2.our nation is democratic and every citizen is treated equally without any difference.
3. Due to sensitive issues that can happen

Well, Pakistanis always like to segregate themselves from the Indians. Since, they are predominantly muslims they prefer calling India - Hindustan ( meaning place of Hindus ! ) !!! now does that answer your question ?
I guess the government and us, can do a lot more better things than name changes like Calcutta to Kolkata, Bombay to Mumbai, Madras to Chennai, Bangalore to Bengalooru... think abt it.. whatz in a name ????

Bharath is India's second official name on record.
India is not merely a"Hindustan" as Pakistan wants to project.
We have more number of Musalmans than Pakistan here and also a large number of Christians,Buddhists and Jains.Hence we are secular.
