I have a 1887 half penny (Australian), and I was wondering if it is worth anything now in $AU?

Well, it can't be an Australian 1/2 penny coz the Commonwealth of Australia was only formed on 1st January 1901 when the six colonies became a federation. So your coin could be one of the bronze trade or merchant tokens circulated during the colonial period in the individual Australian colonies. But these tokens don't have any denomination on them, so the only way to tell is by the size. Minimum value for a common Australian 19th century trade token is around US$20. Else if your coin has the bust of Queen Victoria on it, then it's an 1887 half penny from Great Britain. It's not uncommon to find British coins in circulation during colonial Australia, most which were brought ashore by British merchants. Value for the British 1887 half penny is around US$1 in well circulated condition.
