When we start to shower, the shower head is quiet, but after about 5 minutes, it starts to "scream, or squeal" and it doesn't let up until we turn the water off. We also seem to lose pressure when this happens.

The first place I would check would be the shower head. Remove any trash you may find and if there is a black neoprene washer with small holes around the outside pry it out and throw it away. This is a water saving device that sometimes squeals. You don't need it to make the shower head work and it will give you better pressure. if after all that it still makes noise I would check the diverter. Some diverters are on the tub spout and some are a part of the valve itself. A good way to check the diverter is to turn on the shower with the shower head removed. If it's quiet then the diverter's OK, if not then you have located the source of the whine.

You can remove and soak the head or do it in place. Fill a plasic bag with vinegar and tie it over the head and let sit for a few hours. Removing would be best so you can turn on the water and clear anything in the lines while you are soaking the head seperately.

It could be the "restrictor" inside the shower head is "limed up", and needs to be cleaned with some CLR.
Take the shower head apart and see if it has a lot of mineral deposits in it, then either clean it or replace it.

Probably lime buid up in the head or in a valve(s) in the line. , cycle all valves in the line a few times and don't forget valves to and from water heater. Clean the shower head after cycling valves.
