Let x = width of Ty's garden
2x + 4 = length of Ty's garden
Perimeter is 72
______________________
Required: the dimensions of the garden

Perimeter = 2 length + 2 width

72 = 2 (2x + 4) + 2x
72 = 4x + 8 + 2x
72 = 6x + 8
72 - 8 = 6x
64 = 6x
64/6 = 6x/6
10.667 = x ==> width
Length = 2x + 4
Length = 2(10.667) + 4
Length = 21.334 + 4
length = 25.334

Length = 25 1/3 metres
Width = 10 2/3 metres

Perimeter = 72

2 x length + 2 x width = 72
2 x 25 1/3 + 2 x 10 2/3 = 72
(close enough for the Dr.Q and hence proved!!)

Assuming the garden in rectangular in shape, then the perimeter is two lengths plus two widths. Let "w" be the width. Then the length is 2w + 4. So adding everything up, we have:
2*w + 2(2w + 4) = 72

Solve this for w to find the width, then use 2w + 4 to find the length:
w + (2w + 4) = 72/2
3w + 4 = 36
3w = 32
w = 32/3
So the width is 32/3 m and the length is 2*(32/3) + 4 = 64/3 + 12/3 = 76/3 m

Width = w
Length = 2w + 4
2w + 4w + 8 = 72
6w = 64
w = 64/6 = 32 / 3
Width = 32/3 m
Length = 64/3 + 4 = 76/3 m

P=2l + 2b
l=4+2b

72=2(4+2b) + 2b
=8 + 4b + 2b
6b = 64
b=64/6
=10.67m

l=4+2b
=25.33m

The garden is 25.33m by 10.67m to the nearest 0.01m

Length=2*Width+4
Perimeter=72=2L+2W
72=2(2W+4)+2W
72=4W+8+2W
72=6W+8
72-8=6W
64=6W
64/6=W
32/3=W
Length=(2*32/3)+4
Length=64/3+4
Length=(64+12)/3
Length=76/3
Width=32/3
