Sorry my poor english, i am Italian now living in Ireland. I have started to learn horse riding. My riding teacher told me to wear jeans when i ride she says jeans are comfortable. So I wear tight levis. they are only jeans i have. The next lesson one other learner told me not to wear them he said wear baggy combat trousers. He said they are better for horse riding. I then say my teacher which is best? she then said my tight fitting jeans are better. I feel comfortable in my levis aswell. Should I change and wear combats next time I go riding?

The main concerns are that what you wear is safe - so making sure it cannot get caught in the stirrups etc - wont scare/excite the horse, causing it to misbehave - never wear wide leg jeans on a windy day when riding a high strung horse - and is comfortable for the rider. There are rules about clothing for competitions and shows but these are mainly to address these issues and are now traditional and the 'dressing up' is part of the exciting show experience, but for day to day you could ride nude if you felt so inclined - although best to keep away from public spaces if you do!

You should wear what you find to be most comfortable. Everyone has a different opinion on what they find comfortable, and what you find comfortable for horse riding is probably going to be similiar to what you find comfortable for everyday - you will be used to the feel of the material and how it moves etc. Some people do find that jeans rub because the material is thick and quite stiff and inside seams on the leg can rub in any style trousers, but if you dont find this to be the case then it is not a problem. If you are only just learning to ride the last thing you need is to be feeling uncomfortable in your own clothes while you are trying to concentrate on your riding.

Carry on wearing your jeans, and good luck with your riding :)

I ride in the USA a lot, helping gather cows etc, its not so much if you wear jeans or combats, but as another person mentioned where are the seams in the trousers, these can cause rubbing and soreness it you are in the saddle a long time or your legs get wet, thats why jodpurs can be far more comfortable, and why cowboys wear chaps to protect their legs.

Feel comfortable and relaxed is more important both to you and the horse, if you are tense and uncomfortable the horse will sense it and maybe play up because of it or feel nervous because you are not happy.

Ireland is a great place for horses and riding, I had one of my dreams come true when I rode on the beach over there, near Clifton a few years ago....it was fantastic!

Enjoy

Having recently taken up riding again after nearly 30 years, I can promise that a good pair of well fitting jodhpurs is best. Jeans, as mentioned have uncomfortable seams and why would you want to mess up perfectly good clothes?
Also, the back rises a lot higher on jodphurs making it decent viewing for on-lookers!
However, my 14 year old who is reading over my shoulder disagrees and said that good denim is tougher if you fall off... So take your pick! - whatever you think! Its more important to have a good safety hat (done up)and a pair of riding boots - these are really quite cheap.

I've always been told jeans are a no no and when i have had to ride in jeans i regret it. jeans have a seam on the inside of the leg that will rub against the saddle and your leg and will hurt especially as you get better.

try leggings or combat trousers its for the best.

You should wear what you feel comfortable in, and I think your Levis would be better any ways. I do not like to wear anythinh baggy when riding, for safety and comfort reasons. I think you are better off in the jeans.

Hi there, i used to do quite a bit of horse-riding, must say i found cantering the best, i used to wear jeans but the stretchy type they were comfortable and easy to move around in. I did not like Jodhpurs, just thought i looked silly in them. But yes, stretch denim is fine, in S-Africa no-one togged out in the full riding gear we are very casual about it. I always hated wearing a hat, never wore one but it is safe to wear it as well. Happy riding and don't forget to groom your horse after your ride.:)))

The problem with jeans is that the seams are in the wrong place and can rub. You can end up with blisters. So clothes that have softer seams are usually more comfortable.
If you are ok with your jeans stick to those; if they are well worn and softer they'll be ok. But new jeans might be painful as the denim is stiff; so if you switch go with something looser in a softer fabric.

You should wear what is comfortable for you. I always ride in jeans.

Although, you don't want your pants to be too tight as that will limit your movement and circulation. You may want to purchase a pair of jeans that are a bit looser.

neither jeans or combats are good to ride in.
i'm a riding instructor, jeans have seams down the inner leg that will cause nasty sores and may be blisters, combats will crease and cause the same problem.
invest in a good pair of breeches/jodpurs and you shouldnt have any problem.
you should always wear the correct riding clothes,
riding boots/jodpur boots, breeches/jodpurs, riding hat/skull cap should be priority

Wear anything that you are comfortable in. I've found underwear more important then trousers. But if you are going for a long ride I would recommend breeches.
