I started taking birth control pills again 1 week ago and have been spotting. I've never had this happen before, my Dr. says it's normal. But it is so prevalent I decided to wear a tampon. My fiance and I went to have sex, and I couldn't find the string (even used a mirror to search for it), but I can't remember ever taking it out. He said he didn't notice anything different.

If I had one in, would I be able to see the string no matter what? I am embarrassed to ask this because I have been using them for over 10 years...

I went to the bathroom beforehand to take it out and was looking for the string then, not afterward. Forget about me having sex.

What I am asking is, is it possible for me to have a tampon in and not be able to see the string? I couldn't see anything when I checked. I did the whole leg on the sink, using the mirror, even poked around a bit.

You probably took it out already. You can feel around for it, or ask your partner to feel around for it. It is possible for the string to get pushed way up there.

One of my friends left one in and forgot...she started to worry because every time she had sex, she had a black discharge that smelled terrible. I told her it might be a lost tampon, but she was sure that her husband wouldn't have fit in there if there was a tampon too. She went to the doctor and it did turn out to be a tampon. The doc removed it and prescribed antibiotics for her.

I am not a doctor but my gut feeling tells me that If you don't remember taking it out, and can't find the string, it could have been forced further up into your reproductive system, if you have had sex. If that is the case, then you could cause serious damage to your tubes or your uterus. You should go to a gyn doctor and get a deep vaginal exam. ASAP .
The blood could be from damaged lineing in the vaginal walls
or even deeper into or the uterus itself.

Only if you can't get it out or if you have pain after. I have seen several women have to go to the emergency room to have a tampon removed for that very reason. They were very embarrassed.

Get to a doctor - NOW! It can get so lost that you need a professional to remove it. The longer you leave it in, the more dangerous it is for your health. Seriously - Toxic shock syndrome can develop and it is very likely to kill you. That, and you'll start to smell terrible.

This happens more often then you'd think. Schedule an emergency appointment!

if you have a doubt see you docter as soon as possible, if untreated it will become infected, you may become infertile or catch toxic shock syndrom (TSS) if this be the case it has been known for some women to die within 3 days! GET IT CHECKED OUT WITHOUT A DOUBT!!
it can get into the womb depending on the size of his manhood

Sometimes the tampon gets trapped...your best bet is going to your gyno to check it out. It's not embarrassing - things like this happen, and it's just another event of a person's life.

You would most likely be in pain. Happend to a friend of mine and most the time you wouldn't be able to find the string you would have to go to the hospital or your doctor to get it removed as it can cause TSS.

My friend did the exact same thing and had to go to hospital to get it out.
But seriously, as gross as this may sounds, get your fingers up there and see if you can find it. You should be able to touch your cervix with the tip of your finger.

It is possible to "lose" a tampon. You need to see a GYN to get it out, or it'll start smelling.
