I hate it too. Like a couple of Sat. ago, I was in cleaning mode, and definetly looked the part, when my father in law came over for no apparent reason, my husband was at work. After I hinted that I was busy, and got him to leave, I was getting ready to finish my day by going to pick up a carpet shampooer and MY dad stops by. My mom was already there too. They're divorced. So I said F*ck it, you two stay here with the kids, I went to pick up the carpet thing, and when I got back, I made every one leave. It's really rude not to call first. No excuse when every one and their grandmother has cell phones. Next time, I just won't answer the door!

depends if the unexpected guest if a friend you haven`t seen in a long time (i would feel happy) or a very obnoxious person ( i would invent an excuse and try to cut the meeting short)

It depends on who it is. It is a bit rude to go somewhere unexpected though.

Make it clear that they should've contacted you before deciding to impose themselves on you.
People like this don't feel any guilt about interrupting others daily lives, they most likely do this to other people too who don't put them in their place. Someone HAS to set them straight, step up and let your feelings be known.
The best thing to do when faced with intrusive persons is to tell them you're on your way out. Tell them you're about to go to sleep or you're expecting someone about business.
Leave them no alternative but to turn around and go bother someone else.
If they act hurt or offended, screw them.
You're under no obligation to accomodate anyone.

I love it. My home is always open to friends. If I am busy, they either help or I take a much needed break.

I hate it too. I think it is so rude to turn up at someone's place unannounced.

I don't mind it. I figure they can't expect me to have a clean house if I didn't know they were coming ;)
