to get less upset about human suffering than animal suffering?
If I hear a news item about an animal that has been mistreated or abused, it breaks my heart. Whereas stories about the awful things people do to one another or kids with cancer or whatever... are sad but somehow I don't care as much. I think maybe it's something to do with animals being so defenceless. Does anyone else ever feel this way?

No. I spent over fifty years in health care. One of my responsibilities was to assist on autopsies. I found this work to be both very interesting and exciting, but if my dog gets sick I can't handle it. The thought of any animal suffering is totally repugnant to,me

It's not heartless.
You just like animals more than people, and/or hear more about animals, not humans. Some people are total psychopaths, and don't feel bad about human suffering (or any suffering) at all. Now that would be heartless.

I get real angry & sort of feel the same also but i suppose you do still feel bad for the humans but you know heaps will be done for them & the animals suffer in silent without many friends to protect them because they cant talk & tell us! something like that I think

animals can't speak out about how cruel they get treated but people and kids can an animal can't tell you if its hurting or suffering so its natural you feel like this what people do to animals your an animal lover

I think we've become numb to it. We see or hear stories about crime, murder, rape and abuse every day on the news and it starts to loose it's effect.
