because you would need black chalk. white chalk is easy to find and blackboards could easily be made out of slate

All blackboards used to be black and were written on with white chalk.
Nowadays they are white and you write on them in multi-colored marker pens, but the name stuck.

Actually most of them are green now. I think the first ones were made out of slate and it was black.
