I have a piece of pretty tough leather, one side is nice and smooth, which is the finished side, and the other side is very rough, unrefined. How do I make the rough side nice and smooth as the finished side without having any leather tools?

Your not going to be able to get the rough side smooth like the other without the special tools. However You can use baby
oil and just keep soaking it in.

The rough side of leather is suede and you will never be able to finish it like the top grain side of the leather. It is a completely different construction to the top grain so is impossible to finish in the same way.

polish it with varnish and use sand paper.

only u can polish it.
