Causes of the American Civil War: A Summary

There were a series of significant events which greatly affected States' Rights, the Union, African Americans and accelerated the American Civil War. These historical events are commonly referred to as the "Causes of the American Civil War" and are listed without significant order:

States' Rights (Bill of Rights and the 10th Amendment)
High Tariffs
Bleeding Kansas
Crittenden Compromise
President Abraham Lincoln's election (Lincoln didn't receive a single Southern electoral vote).

SLAVERY was the root of all evil but Southern Apologist insist that Slavery had nothing to do with it they would argue that the Number One of the Five would be ;;; 1) The Growing Political Power of the Northern & Western States since the ratio of slave states to free states was growing in favor of the North and West (and don't buy into any of that rhetoric about slavery being limited to the cotton & tobaco growing regions, slaves can just as easilly farm wheat or dig in mines, the Northern & Western States simply did not want Slavery.

And

2) States Rights versus Federal, put simply South Carolinians did not see why they had to oay taxes on goods brought through their ports to support improvements elsewhere in America.

What they will never admit is that the Civil War was ----

3) Treason - - - Jefferson Davis and a Cabal of Southerners wanted power and preferred running a Southern Empire rather than a United States of A... Davis had been working behind the scenes for decades, mosy noticibly as Secretary of War, where he funneled funds & weapons to Southern armories. Conceivably if the CS of A had brokered peace with the US of A, in time the Confederacy would have attacked the Gulf Coast of Mexico (great cotton land) and Cuba (sugar plantations) and reintroduced slavery to Cuba.

4) Abraham Lincoln's stubborness - - - he was the loudest voice calling for war and reunification, many Northerners were happy to see the South Go. Linoln was the catalyst for war.

5) WAR was actually a means to coerce the wavering border states into declaring their loyalty for either the US of A or the Confederacy. South Carolina was hoping that by being agressive early the South would show that it was serious in this matter and that would prompt Kentucky and Tennessee and Maryland and maybe Deleware to join in Rebellion. The US of A was forced to fight to keep those states in the Union, to show it was equally serious.

Peace....

(come on, bring on those negatives for calling Jefferson Davis a traitor------- you know who you are)

to all who say slavery

then why were there 3 slave states that stayed in the Union? and got to keep there slaves until AFTER the war ended

Main reasons are like all other wars, economic

It was not slave vs free states, it was agrarian vs industrial states

the tariff system was killing the south, and the westward expansion was adding states that would have voted with the north, so the south figured it best to be on there own and resigned, then the federals invaded

states rights vs. the limits of the federal goverment. we are taught that slavery is the reason, but come on now. all wars are about money and control.

i say you look at harpers ferry and a few of the things that happened in the western territories at that time and they will clue you into how states rights was a major major factor in the war.

Seems as though you are asking others to do your homework. Good questions. Do the research yourself and the assigned reading and stop relying on the answers given to you by others. Claiming they are your own ideas is called cheating. At least preserve your reputation.
