By gang like thinking I mean.

into the notion of respect and dont dis me thinking.

the kind who dont mug people as despierate and starving.

but as they like feeling dominant and instilling fear and hurting others.

Where they look up to aggression, toughness, violence.

Where there is a pecking order based on power.

Where they want to attack anyone who questions them or their bahavour.

When they enjoy hurting others and find it fun, ie happy slapping and would not be horrified or sickened by violence.

I see what you are saying but if the politicians changed the law to say something like that then wouldn't any group of 5 or more be suspect to such thinking? That would be an infringement of our rights because we do have the right to assemble whether for good or for bad.
Besides, if a member of a "bad" gang goes and kills someone I would not like them having an excuse like, "I was in a gang so that means that I am a psychopath and that is why I committed said crime so put me in a mental institution and rehabilitate me and let me out." No way. Put them in prison. He or she should be held responsible for their actions whether in a gang or not and not have some cop out.

Hello,

(ANS) I think the truth is a more complex and difficult to determine than it first appears. You have to ask yourself the question why? do such people want or need to belong to a group or a gang in the first place.

Such people are looking for something, something they are unable to find else where? They have a need that is unforfilled else where.

In my opinion people who join a gang or crew are looking for certain psychological and emotional needs to be met which they cannot fulfil else where. Especially such needs are NOT being met by the traditional family, or perhaps these people didn't have a happy normal family. Perhaps they were brought up by a single parent, perhaps they had an absent father, perhaps the father left them, perhaps the father was in prison and so forth.

**Gang membership is often a replacement family, a place of protection, gang membership can confirm a sense of identity, gang membership can bring a sense of respect amongst members, the motivations are many & complex.

**Gang or group behavior can have a VERY powerful influence upon an individual. A person might not normally behave in a violent or malicious way but influenced by the group, violent acts might be expected in order to gain respect within the group. Its wolf pack mentality if you like!

**we live in a winner takes all society, a place where bling is king!! this is most epitomized by gun culture, street culture. Sadly, if you don't have the symbol's of cultural affluence i.e. the flash motor, the flash mobile, etc such people almost inevitably will rob or steal or mug another to gain the symbols of acceptance.

**YES! Morals & normal kinds of respect go out of the window thats true!

**If someone has empathy or sympathy they would never rob or hurt someone else. To rob or mug another is NOT possible if you have empathy or sympathy, such muggers or robbers are probably on drink or drugs anyway. They probably steal to fund a drug habit anyway.

We call it gang, they call it a family, however wrong the thing's they do
and i'm not advocating what they do
i certainly would'nt wanna be on the bussiiness end of them, but by the
same token if what i read and see
going on in the so called normal modern
families today who quite frankly i would say bare a hell of an uncany resemblance to the adams family, well all i can say is a gang or a group or a family what ever you want to call it, every body want's and need's to be a part of some one's life and want's to be accepted, i mean look at the internet this place give's new meaning to the word gang, lynch mob is more like it.

some of what i see going on in this place and other sites, make what these gangs do look like child's play and i'm not talking about chucky doll . . . and while it may be true there tactics may be a bit over the line, there aliegons and loyalty to each other is at times quite enviable to say the least, some of us could learn a thing or two from these so called as you put it, psychopaths . . .

My son has a lot of friends who all hang around together, is that a gang? They don't do any harm, have never mugged anyone or been violent and yet are labelled by people like you. The police move them on or tell them to split up, why should they? Just because you have a group of young people hanging around together doesn't make them up to no good. I often see groups of old people hanging around on corners, are they a gang?

Because of the effect in Social Psychology called group influence, peer pressure, obedience, and group conformity.

These effects have so strong an influence on people that normal people can fall prey to an influential person taking advantage of such factors, eg: Hitler, political figures, cliches in school.

Psychopaths have mental problems that only include social factors like i mentioned, but also genetic factors, dysfunctions in the brain and its chemistry, psychological malfunctioning, and personality problems.

Just because they are a member of a group doesnt mean they have all these other factors. They could be victims of social influence, but have normal genes, normal functioning brain, normal psychological functioning, and good personality.

When the Government effectively accentuates the ideal by the levels of power, glory hunting etc., when Directors and Senior managers up and down the country do the same thing in the name of "Corporate" greed, why would those youngsters not see the same ideals in another form via gang empathy ? I understand your theory, but it applies across the board.

Are those you speak of not Sociopaths, not Psychopaths ?

The power to section someone is not likely to be available to a lay person. Indeed it requires at least 2 medical doctors, presumably one of which would be a doctor who knows you well enough to make a fair assessment.

Gangs are not illegal. If they do anything illegal, then the police are able to lock them up in prison. This is essentially the same thing a sectioning someone.

The main difference, is that someone who is sectioned is likely to have a GP whom he or she has visited on several occasions and has a history of violent behaviour or self abuse. If a person is of no harm to themselves or to anyone else, then they cannot be sectioned legally.

The doctors would be sent to prison if they behaved like this!

interesting question. well, members of a gang join because of some sort of peer pressure, neighborhood they live in or a "rite of passage" from one family member to a next. its a kind of status. you can't be punk if your dad is part of the brotherhood??? but does not mean i'm heartless, have no conscious????. yes, they do robb, kill and steal, just for the hell of it, but guess what? there are alot of people in gangs who would trade places with you in a minute! being in a gang is a different world--the only world you see, because you are on the inside, and have probably been there all your life! HOWEVER IT DOES NOT MEAN THAT THEY ARE PSYCHOPATHS. PSYCHOPATHS KILL WITHOUT REMORESE, BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT AWARE OF WHAT THEY ARE DOING. SOCIOPATHS KILL WITHOUT REMORSE AS WELL--BUT ARE FULLY AWARE OF WHAT THEY ARE DOING! being black does'nt autmatically make you an athletc, being asian does necessary make you smart, being white does'nt make you rich! being in a gang does not make your a psychopath!

An interesting premise. But I think that the gang members will probably empathise with their de facto family or group. People we have a closer affinity to will be given emotional priority to those we don't.

Primarily because of people like you who've already jumped to the conclusion of what constitutes a gang ... without thinking it through.
