I have learned the general rule that when buttoning a single-breasted suit jacket you close the topmost button if it has two buttons and either the middle or topmost and middle if it has three buttons.

I recently see a lot of men buttoning only the topmost button on a three-button suit jacket. This is something I have sometimes seen on old photographs of Italien men but not worn recently up to now.

Can anybody tell me about the origin and history of this way of buttoning a suit jacket?

We have a saying in the industry relating to buttons on a 3 button - top, middle, bottom -> sometimes, always, never.

With 2 buttons, just the top button.

The same principle applies to both - it just gives a more flattering shape - if you button the bottom one it tends to pull. When you sit down as well it makes the jacket hunch up.

No historical reason I am afraid, but if you ask a question about the history of turn-up trousers, I can tell you that.

For men or women people? i think of a three button healthy is often the greater helpful selection for a guy. for women folk people i do no longer think of it concerns as plenty - I easily have some a million button jackets which look particularly professional and flatter my physique greater so they provide the impact of being greater helpful on me.
