If the dent does not have a sharp crease, you can get a small piece of dry ice and hold it over the dent. It will make the surface contract due to the cold and the dent will pop out. This is the same method used for paintless dent repair and hail damage at most auto body shops. If you don't feel comfortable handling the dry ice, I'm sure you can find a body and fender man who would like to earn a couple of bucks on the side.

I think the magnetic door thing is the best idea. If you have kids it would be great. Treat it like a door on an expensive car, you either live with it or pay the price.

I deal with furniture and appliance retailers, and have been told that the only thing they can do is replace the panel. That's why so many appliances are sold as scratch and dent for the littlest thing--chiefly on the doors, not end panels, which can be touched up if they are painted.
